Many people are spending Memorial Day weekend traveling, barbecuing and spending time with friends and family, but it\u2019s important to remember what Memorial Day is really all about.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle, according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs.<\/p>\n

On Memorial Day, one of the ways we honor those brave men and women is by properly displaying the American flag.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On May 30, 2016, the flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon only and then raised briskly to the top of the staff until sunset.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to the Flag Code, when displaying the US flag at half-staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it to half-staff.<\/p>\n

The flag is not a decoration, but a symbol of our country. We often think about it on holidays like Memorial Day, but it\u2019s important to respect it throughout the year.<\/p>\n

According to US Code Title 4, the flag should never touch anything beneath it. It should never be used as wearing apparel. The American Flag, when displayed at night should always be lit.<\/p>\n

When the flag is torn, faded or badly soiled, it should be destroyed in a dignified way. You can take flags to your local boy scout troop who can make sure it\u2019s handled properly.<\/p>\n\n
